EARSC Response: Call for Evidence on a revision of EU rules on marine environmentprotection

In March 2026, the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies published its response to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the revision of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), highlighting the need for stronger, more integrated monitoring of Europe’s seas.

Representing the Earth Observation sector, EARSC emphasises the role of satellite data and remote sensing in improving marine monitoring, particularly in remote and hard-to-access areas. The response underlines the importance of moving towards harmonised observation systems, where data from satellites, in-situ measurements, and models are combined into a coherent and accessible framework.

At OCEANIDS, this vision closely aligns with ongoing work to connect ocean observations, models, and in-situ data into integrated systems that support more effective decision-making. Strengthening data quality, accessibility, and interoperability is essential to support the implementation of marine policies and to achieve good environmental status across European seas.
