Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership Symposium

The second biennial Symposium of the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership took place in Bucharest on February 11th, 2026, marking a key milestone in the implementation phase of the Partnership. Held under the theme “Full Sail Ahead Towards the Sustainable Blue Economy”, the event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, industry representatives, and project consortia, to assess ongoing progress and define priorities for the next phase of Europe’s blue transition. Particular attention was given to developments in the Black Sea region, highlighting both challenges and emerging opportunities within this strategic basin.

OCEANIDS was represented at the Symposium, contributing to discussions focused on strengthening the links between research, policy, and market uptake. The exchanges emphasised the importance of ensuring that research outputs are effectively translated into actionable solutions, capable of supporting decision-making processes and driving innovation within the blue economy. In this context, the strategic role of data was identified as a key enabler of sustainable ocean governance, supporting improved monitoring, forecasting, and evidence-based planning across coastal and maritime domains.

A strong focus was also placed on the need to enhance cross–sea basin cooperation, recognising that many of the challenges faced by European seas require coordinated and transnational approaches. Participants highlighted the importance of aligning efforts across different regions and initiatives, as well as ensuring continuity through sustained financing mechanisms. These elements were identified as critical to maintaining momentum and enabling long-term impact beyond individual projects or funding cycles.

The Symposium reaffirmed a shared commitment to advancing a sustainable and resilient maritime future across Europe. The priorities discussed are closely aligned with OCEANIDS’ mission to support inclusive and data-driven approaches to coastal and ocean management, integrating Earth Observation, modelling, and stakeholder engagement to inform policy and practice. By contributing to these broader discussions, OCEANIDS continues to position itself within the evolving European blue economy landscape, supporting pathways towards more resilient coastal societies.
